Underwood & Underwood

Underwood & Underwood -active Ottawa, Canada and New York 1880s – 1940s, Photographer (Photography, Stereoscopic, Photojournalism),  Publisher. The Underwood brothers, Elmer (1859-1947) and Bert (1862-1943) began the company by selling stereoscopes door to door.TThe company originally sold stereoscopic , as well as home stereoscope kits. The company grew rapidly, eventually moving to New York (1887), producing its own photographs (1891). By 1901, they were selling 300,000 stereoscopes a year and producing more than 25,000 cards a day. The company established branches in Baltimore, London, and Canada, and relocated their headquarters to New York City in 1891. They providing photographs to newspapers (1896), and establishing a wire-service-like sales agency (1904). They sold their back catalogue and rights to the Keystone View Company (which was subsequently acquired by Mast Industries in the 1970s.) in 1920 and unincorporated in the early 1940’s.

Underwood and Underwood dominated the news-photography industry until 1920

An army of freelance news photographers was fielded and newspaper and magazine publishers seeking to break away from traditional line drawings and wood cut illustrations clamored for Underwood and Underwood prolific output.

Around 1904 they set up a sales agency that would virtually dominate the news photo field for the next 30 years.  For exemple they were activs in the Moffett Studio ( partnership between Evan Albert Evans and camera artist George Moffett in 1905). In the latter 1910s, Moffett turned over the theatrical photography to camera artist Paul R. Stone who, though he was not granted credit on images, was allowed to voice expert opinions under his own name in the press. Stone handled the celebrity shoots until Evan Evans turned over direction of the studio to a management team appointed by Underwood and Underwood in mid-1920s. At that juncture he joined Raymor Studios in Chicago, a gallery that ran a diversified business in the city. Rebranded the Paul R. Stone-Raymor Studios they remained an active business from the 1920s through the 1940s. However, the arrest by the F.B.I. of studio employee Earnest D. Wallis for possession of photographs of classified plans for the A bomb in 1947 fatally damaged the studio’s reputation. In the 1940s, Underwood & Underwood sold Moffett Studio to the partnership of Robert T. McKearnan and Jack Russell.

Of course, those are not the Stereoscopes interest in their work,  although that is what retains them. Rather, it is the second phase of their development which I like. Beautiful portraits , including the greatest artists of the time. They published mainly in magazines, (I put an example of what they could be asked to produce. ) , Which restricts the possibility of finding proof silver gelatin prints . No Nudes this time , but still the favorites subjects : Actresses years 1910-20s , dance, and the improbable event testimony. The next time i will propose  fashion photos and other artists)

Orné d’une couverture par Pablo Picasso, Corps mémorable, publié chez Seghers en 1957, réunit douze nus féminins de Lucien Clergue illustrant des poèmes de Paul Éluard. Le poème liminaire de Cocteau, À Clergue pour ses nus, écrit en novembre 1956 à Villefranche, a été adressé à celui que le poète appelle désormais son « cher coq d’Arles ».

Plusieurs rééditions existent aujourd »hui qui n’ont plus rien à voir avec l’original, qui ne comprenait que 12 photos. Vous pouvez trouver ce livre pour 30euros Editions Pierre Seghers, Paris, 1996. Troisième édition, Clergue. 65 pp. par exemple.

John Everard

John Everard est un photographe anglais autodidacte de renommée internationale notamment pour son travail sur les formes féminines dans le style dit « art déco ». Sa carrière s’est déroulée entre la fin des années 20 et les début des années 60. Il a partagé à Londres un studio à Londres avec deux autres photographes renommés : Walter Bird   ( Voir l’article Ici)   et Horace Roye (voir l’article Ici). Il a été acclamé et publié très tôt dans sa carrière.  Tout comme ses acolytes, il a produit de nombreux ouvrages tels que » Portrait of a Model »  Londres George Routledge & Sons Ltd. 1939 ( Ltd étant la maison d’édition crée par roye Bird et lui même),  « Judgement of Paris, French nudes », ed° George Routledge, London, 1941, « Life line » Ltd., London,  1936, « Oriental Model » Published by Robert Hale Ltd., London  1955, » Adams Fifth Rib » ,Ltd., London 1936 , pour ne citer qu’eux, puisque ceux sont ces derniers que je vous présente aujourd’hui. J’ai scanné des  livres, mais peu de planches car au vu de l’utilisation et du respect qu’il existe sur le net, je ne fais plus don de photos provenant de livre à 1000 euros… ainsi que celles qu’on ne trouve pas sur le net.. le reste se trouve, sans être bien sur attribué au bon livre et souvent avec des dates et titres erronés même pour les galeries et sites de ventes aux enchères, comme Walter Bird d’ailleurs et de surcroit toute avec un tirage de négatifs rayés.

La trilogie des ces merveilleux anglais que j’affectionne particulièrement se termine donc . Ils sont à mes yeux ce que František Drtikol est à la photographie Tchèque, ce que  József Pécsi est à la photographie Hongroise, des grands maîtres de la lumière de la mise en scène, et des formidables amoureux de la femme, proposant des photographies d’elles sans aucune vulgarité, avec une délicatesse infinie.

il est indéniable qu’ Edwin Bower Hesser fût très inspiré par Les photographies faites autour d’Isadora Duncan et ses danseurs ( mouvement de la danse grecque)  aux modèles  en plein air, ( plage, parc, bois) nus ou avec de légers voiles. Il existait à cette époque une très forte croyance en les idéaux du mouvement de culture physique, du corps parfait  , de la beauté corporelle, de l hygiène et de la sexualité expressive qui émanait du corps. Isadora Duncan, tout comme Ted Shawn, Annette Kellerman, Margaret Edwards, ou Douglas Fairbanks en étaient les portes paroles, avec cette volonté  de montrer au  public ce à quoi ressemblerait la splendeur de ce qu’ils nommaient le « Temple de Dieu, » le physique humain.Heisser s’accrochant à se mouvement en est devenu ce qu’on pourrait qualifié de  » fanatique », espérant proposer un modèle parfait de la « future race humaine » ( propos quelque peu discutables et emprunt d’un certain eugénisme, ce qui lui fût reproché….). Ceci dit, On ne peut pas lui enlever le fait qu’il a su mettre en scène une harmonie entre formes humaines et formes de la nature.

Horace Roye-Narberth, plus communément connu sous le nom d’artiste Roye, fut l’un des pionniers photographes britanniques du 20e siècle,  célèbre pour ses nus et des photos de starlettes et notamment pour celle ci Tomorrow’s crucifixion , d’un tout autre genre.

A partir de 1938, Roye produit une succession d’études sur le nu féminin.publiées sous forme de petits livrets  comme ceux  qui vous sont présentés aujourd’hui, véritable ôde à la beauté féminine et sa nudité.  The Welsh Maid, The Irish Maid , The Scottish Maid , The English Maid,  The Irish Maid, qui ont tous trouvés une  extrême popularité, en particulier pendant la guerre. Ces photographies sont prises en bord de mer où à la campagne, pour chaque livret, les mises en scène sont les mêmes. La plage, sur la mer, dans un près, dans un verger, dans les rochers…

Ces livrets ne sont qu’un tout petit aspect de son large travail, reste à son actif bien plus de publications, et comme il aimait à le dire, Roye a vu passer plus 10.000 femmes nues à travers l’objectif.  Il a également  travaillé pour le cinéma . Il était ami et collaborateur avec Walter Bird  ( Voir l’article Ici) et John Everard ( Voir l’article Ici) , qui tout comme lui sont des grands noms de la photographie de nu des années 1930-1940. avec lesquels il a publié notament Eves without leaves . Ils ont crée en ensemble les editions LTD .

Pour la petite anecdocte,  Il a été poursuivi pour avoir refusé de passer de l’aérographe sur les poils pubiens d’une photo, mais  al a réussi à se défendre en justice et avaoir gain de cause, arguant que la représentation de la beauté ne doit pas être entravée par la pruderie.
