Avec « Mirror of Vénus » Wingate Paine a créé une icône de la révolution sexuelle des années 1960. Bien innocent par rapport aux normes d’aujourd’hui, la photographie de Paine a repoussé les limites de ce qui était considéré comme la photographie d’art acceptable à cette époque.
Avec l’aide de sa femme, Natalie Paine, qui dirigait une grande agence de mannequins New York, Paine a engagé trois modèles remarquables comme collaboratrices : Sandy Brown, Carla Molière et Scarlett ?.
Paine photographie ses modèles avec espect, et désir. Les femmes de Paine se tiennent debout sur le seuil du féminisme 60s. Un pied reste dans le domaine sexiste des hommes (comme exprimé dans le texte de Fellini), tandis que l’autre pied entre dans une sphère femmes plus autonomes (donné par la voix par Sagan). Paine a réussi à produire un classique érotique moderne, fidèle à son époque. « Mirror de Vénus » a influencé plusieurs générations de photographes. Ils ont imité idées graphiques de Paine et désirs élégants
Né en 1915, Paine était un membre d’une famille de nouveau riche d’ Angleterre ayant des liens etroit avec le pouvoir (avec loi, banques , ministère) .Il a rompu totalement avec ses origines et est devenu un capitaine marin, et un photographe doué.
Paine était l’un des meilleurs photographes de publicité à New York dans les années 1960,tout comme Avedon et Penn. Au milieu des années 1960 il a mis de côté sa carrière de publicitairepour se consacrer à son opus, « Mirror of Vénus », qu’il a décrit comme une «confirmation de mes sentiments envers la beauté et de belles femmes. » Après avoir fini miroir de Vénus et de superviser ses nombreux éditions, il se retira de la photographie, et est devenu un maître spirituel ( il pratiquait depuis toujours le Hatha-Yoga), et écrivit deux livres: Tilling the Soul (Santa Fe: Aurora Press, 1984), et The Book of Surrender (New York: Prentice Hall, 1987). Il est décédé à Santa Fe en 1987.
