Laurence Le Guay ( Australian 1917-1990)

Le Guay commenced his career during the 1930s with surrealist photography,  and integred Dayne Studios in 1935 at the age of 18. He became a member of the prestigious Sydney Camera Circle and the Contemporary Camera Groupe, in 1938, which included Max Dupain and Olive Cotton, as well as several older photographers including Harold Cazneaux and Cecil Bostock. The Groupe was committed to practising and promoting a modern Australian approach to photography. Le Guay, like Dupain and other members, was interested in European modernism and wanted to find a way to use this style to create uniquely Australian images.

During the second war he was a war photographer for the RAAF. During WWII he was a war photographer for the RAAF.

After opening his studio in George Street, in Sydney , he became a partner with John Nesbett in 1947 and began to focus on fashion photography and other advertising work until the closure of the studio during the early 1970s. Up to this time Le Guay was Sydney’s leading fashion photographer. He then concentrated on publishing books on his photography, editing photographic books and magazines, and giving lectures.

‘The progenitors’ is one of a series of montage works that Le Guay produced on the theme of modernism and the human condition. In the image, the nude man and woman are positioned as massive figures within an industrial landscape. The woman looks skyward with one hand pressed to her temple, while the man is seated at her feet and gazes up at her and the factory towers. The pose of the woman echoes the towers of the factory behind her, while the light and cloud suggest the enlightenment of the industrial world. The implication is that the couple are a modern Adam and Eve, with their ability to produce a new Australian race intrinsically linked to the productive capabilities of the modern industrial machines behind them.

Walter Bird est un des photographes  Anglais les plus reconnus pour ses images exceptionnelles du nu féminin de ce qu’on nomme  « style art déco ». Bien qu’ayant  d’abord été formé en tant que peintre, il est venu rapidement à la photographie . C’est un véritable  maître de la lumière et de la composition, et ses  études de nus  étaient et sont toujours  bien connue à la fois pour le théâtralisme et la beauté artistique, sûrement dû en définitive à sa formation initiale la peinture.
Durant les années 1930 – 1940, Bird  avec  ses amis et collaborateurs John Everard  ( Article Ici ) et Horace Roye ( Article ici ) ont  produit  les meilleures photographies du nu féminin de toute l’Angleterre.  Walter Bird est surtout connu pour son livre  Beauty’s Daughters, paru en 1938 pourtant,  mais il a aussi sorti Beauty’s Self , et …qui sont aussi de très belles études de nus.
Bird utilisait  le tirage Photo-encre  (ce qui est similaire à la  gravure ou  photogravure), tout comme ses contemporains, mais aussi les tirages  de gélatine argentique.
Les photographies aujourdhui présentées utilisent les deux techniques, (vous verrez la différence tout de suite)  , et proviennent de plusieurs livres, » Beauty’s Daughters  » Ed ° John Long Limited, Londres, 1938 48 photogravures, »Beauty’s Self »   John Long Limited, of London,1940,  « Eves without Leaves »  par Walter Bird, Horace Roye et John Everard, Ed Arthur Person LTD 19415 Troisème ed) ,   (l’anecdote de ce livre, d’ une part  Ils se sont  regroupés afin de neâs  se faire concurrence, Mais il est ecrit dans l’avant-propos assez amusant rédigé par Reginald Arkell, rédacteur en chef du Magazine Only Men, que l’objectif du livre était de remonter le moral des troupes de combat de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il a été edité en taille de poche et republié  » fois en une années tant il a eu du succès. On y retrouve des clichés dejà paru dans des  livres individuels de chaque auteur, ( pour Bird c’est Beauty’s Daughters, Pour Roye  Les » Mermaids » c’est  et Everard « Life Line »  ) 

vous pouvez trouvez ces photos sur le net, mais sans les credits et les livres qont ils sont tirés, ou encore mieux , avec un tirage de négatifs rayés.
