Marcel G. Lefrancq est un nom peu connu du surréalisme Belge et pourtant, il compte a son actif bon nombre de collages et de photographies ainsi que quelques objets témoins de ce mouvement en Belgique.

En 1939, il compta parmi les membres fondateurs du Groupe surréaliste en Hainaut. La même année, il est engagé comme photographe par l’IRPA, pour procéder à l’inventaire des oeuvres d’art risquant d’être détruites par la guerre qui s’annonce. En 1940, il publie à deux reprises des clichés dans L’invention collective, la revue belge dirigée par René Magritte ( voir les autres articles sur lui Ici) et Raoul Ubac ( voir les autres articles sur lui Ici), avec qui il est ami, puis il entre dans la résistance.

Après la dissolution du Groupe surréaliste en Hainaut, il participe à la création du groupe Haute Nuit, en 1947. Deux ans plus tard, Dotremont lui écrit pour proposer un rapprochement entre Haute Nuit et Cobra. C’est dans cet esprit que Lefrancq collabore aux numéros 2 et 6 de la celèbre revue Cobra.

La majeure partie de son oeuvre photographique est moins surréalistes ( les thématiques font plus penser à Brassaï, par exemple) mais ses collages ou objets, le restent. je vous propose quelques collages et photographies vous pouvez les retrouver sur le site que son fils à créer Ici (en petits formats).

Katsuji Fukuda

« Fukuda Katsuji was born in 1899. Except for a few years after the Great Kanto Earthquake when he was trying to establish his career in places such as Nakanoseki, Sakai, Hiroshima and Osaka, Fukuda spent his long life working in Tokyo.

After returning to Tokyo for good in 1933, Fukuda had a successful career in advertising photography, specializing in still lifes and nudes with modernist influences, as well as authoring practical books on photography. A series of photographs in Asahi Camera in 1936 featuring portraits of Setsuko Hara and Takako Irie were very popular and led to his first photobooks of women.

After the war Fukuda was one of the first prominent photographers to experiment with color and continued to publish collections of nude studies and books on technique. However his emphasis on the aesthetics of beauty made his work seem old-fashioned during the postwar wave of realism led by Ken Domon and the trends that followed. In 1974 he was not among the 100 living photographers profiled by Camera Mainichi.

However, in 1979 his contribution to the famed Sonorama Shashin Sensho, « Psalm » led to reassessments of his contributions. In the afterword of Psalm, Akira Hasegawa pointed out that « …there are no photographers of women in Japan even today who have not been influenced by Fukuda in one way or another. Many techniques commonly used today were developed by Fukuda, a fact which has been forgotten. »

Fukuda continued working in his old age, long enough to see the increasing estimations of his work that has continued to this day. John Gutmann Part I

« John Gutmann (1905–1998) was one of America’s most distinctive photographers. Born in Germany where he trained as an artist and art teacher, he fled the Nazis in 1933 and settled in San Francisco, reinventing himself as a photo-journalist. Gutmann captured images of American culture, celebrating signs of a vibrant democracy, however imperfect. His own status as an outsider—a Jew in Germany, a naturalized citizen in the United States—informed his focus on individuals from the Asian-American, African-American, and gay communities, as well as his photography in India, Burma, and China during World War II. Gutmann’s interests in painting and filmmaking, his collections of non-Western art and artifacts, and his pedagogy, all figure in a body of work at once celebratory and mysterious.

Gutmann was born to prosperous German-Jewish parents, in Breslau, Germany (since 1945, Wrocław, Poland). At age twenty-two, he graduated from the regional Academy of Arts and Crafts, where he studied with leading Expressionist painter Otto Müller. In 1927 Gutmann moved to Berlin, where he taught art to schoolchildren, participated in group exhibitions, and in 1931 had a solo show at the prestigious Gurlitt Gallery. However, his career was interrupted by the rise to power of the National Socialists in early 1933. While his family made plans to immigrate to New York, Gutmann set out on his own with San Francisco as his destination, and photography as his new profession. Before departing Germany, he acquired a Rolleiflex camera, hastily shot three rolls of film, and managed to secure a contract from the Berlin office of Presse-Photo. Making the most of a bad situation, he explored a new life as a foreign correspondent who would supply the very modern European illustrated press with views and reports from the American West.

By 1936, he had broken his contract with the Berlin press agency and made a new one with Pix in New York. By 1937, he had begun to teach art regularly at San Francisco College (later San Francisco State University), and this became his primary profession after a World War II era stint in the U.S. army. Gutmann retired his professorship in 1973 and began to reassess his body of work, sorting through boxes of negatives and making new prints of selected examples from the 1930s. It was a well-timed exercise: not only did Gutmann’s images satisfy a growing historical appetite for Depression-era photography, they also seemed compatible with certain kinds of experimental photography then emerging in the contemporary art scene. Before his death in 1998, Gutmann had seen his work featured in gallery and museum exhibitions, catalogues, and monographs.

By bequeathing his rich archive of nearly 5000 modern photographic prints, negatives, tearsheets, letters, and some drawings and early art prints to the CCP, John Gutmann has left us with the task of pursuing the rich knots, braids, tangles and threads in his complex life and work that unfolded over a most tumultuous and provocative century of modernity » ccp-emuseum.

Jerzy Benedykt Dorys (1901-1990)

Benedykt Jerzy Dorys est principalement connu en tant que très grand portraitiste (photographique). Son studio, basé à Varsovie, déjà avant la guerre, était un lieu des plus tendance pour ne pas dire « branché » de la Ville de Varsovie et et se faire photographier Dorys n’était pas seulement de bon goût, mais révélait un signe d’appartenance à crème de la crème de l’époque.

Moins connues, mais tout aussi intéressantes sont ses photos de mode et ses quelques photos artistiques du corps nus. Dorys adorait les femmes et a su en sublimer toute les beauté et ce que je vous propose aujourd’hui à travers des portraits et des nus

Horace Roye-Narberth, plus communément connu sous le nom d’artiste Roye, fut l’un des pionniers photographes britanniques du 20e siècle, célèbre pour ses nus et des photos de starlettes et notamment pour celle ci Tomorrow’s crucifixion , d’un tout autre genre.

A partir de 1938, Roye produit une succession d’études sur le nu féminin.publiées sous forme de petits livrets comme ceux qui vous sont présentés aujourd’hui, véritable ôde à la beauté féminine et sa nudité. The Welsh Maid, The Irish Maid , The Scottish Maid , The English Maid, The Irish Maid, qui ont tous trouvés une extrême popularité, en particulier pendant la guerre. Ces photographies sont prises en bord de mer où à la campagne, pour chaque livret, les mises en scène sont les mêmes. La plage, sur la mer, dans un près, dans un verger, dans les rochers…

Ces livrets ne sont qu’un tout petit aspect de son large travail, reste à son actif bien plus de publications, et comme il aimait à le dire, Roye a vu passer plus 10.000 femmes nues à travers l’objectif. Il a également travaillé pour le cinéma . Il était ami et collaborateur avec Walter Bird ( Voir l’article Ici) et John Everard ( Voir l’article Ici) , qui tout comme lui sont des grands noms de la photographie de nu des années 1930-1940. avec lesquels il a publié notament Eves without leaves . Ils ont crée en ensemble les editions LTD .

Pour la petite anecdocte, Il a été poursuivi pour avoir refusé de passer de l’aérographe sur les poils pubiens d’une photo, mais al a réussi à se défendre en justice et avaoir gain de cause, arguant que la représentation de la beauté ne doit pas être entravée par la pruderie.

Je ne vous présente pas toutes les planches de chaque livret mais une sélection, et je ne vous les présente pas non plus dans l’ordre d’apparition (Les teintes de tirage varient selon le livret , je n’ai rien changé, même si le dernier tire beaucoup sur le jaune, et un peu trop à mon goût….) . vous pouvez retrouvez ces planches sur des sites d’enchères en tirage noir et blanc)
