Xan( Alexander) Stark for Alta Studios -Nude Model Olive Ann Alcorn, 1920 from Alta Art Studies ,Vol. I & II, 1920-21

Xan( Alexander) Stark ou Alexander J. ‘Zan’ Stark s’est installé San Francisco vers 1914; Il y a travaillé initialement comme indépendant, pour Art Glisser Studio. A partir de 1920 et jusqu’en 1928, il travaillera pour Alta Film Glisser Co et son nom sera cité. ce qui jusqu’alors n’était pas le cas. Mais dès années 20 et jusqu’au début des années 50 il a utilisé le pseudonyme de Zan Tamalpais.
Contrairement à Albert Arthur Allen actif à la même époque que lui, Stark n’a jamais été poursuivi pour la vente de photographie de nus. Il a photographié de nombreuses stars du cinéma muet comme Seena Owen, Olive Ann Alcorn et Laura La plante, et la grande danseuse russe

Émil Otto Hoppé (1878 – 1972)

Emil Otto Hoppé fut l’un des artistes les plus importants et l’un des  photographes « documentaires » de l’ère moderne, dont le succès artistique rivalisait avec ceux de ses pairs, Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946), Edward Steichen (1879-1973) et Walker Evans ( 1903-1975). Hoppé était l’un des portraitistes les plus célèbres de son époque, tout autant qu’un photographe de scènes de rue et de paysages  éblouissants  et photographe rapportant de sublimes clichés de ses voyage en Inde Afrique et Asie ( qui feront eux l’objets d’un autre article , prochainement )
Ses portraits étonnamment modernistes décrivent un monde virtuel qui est qui de personnalités importantes dans les arts, la littérature et la politique en Grande-Bretagne et aux États-Unis entre les deux guerres. Parmi les centaines de personnalités bien connues qu’il a photographiés étaient George Bernard Shaw, HG Wells, AA Milne, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, G.K. Chesterton, Léon Bakst, Vaslav Nijinsky et les danseurs des Ballets russes, et la reine Marie, le roi George, et d’autres membres de la Royal Family. Il a débuté la photographie d’art en 1903,  Hoppé a été admis en tant que membre de la « Royal Photographic Society » où, au cours de quatre années qui suivent , il expose régulièrement ses œuvres photographiques d’amateur.
Son oeuvre  lui ont valu la réputation d’être le plus influent photographe international de Grande-Bretagne entre 1907 et 1939 . Vous trouverez des biographies bien plus complètes un peut partout sur le net.
Bien sur comme d’habitude je me contenterai de ses nus aujourd’hui ainsi que ses magnifiques portraits et quelques clichés sur la danse, sujet de prédilection ici aussi sur ce blog.

Edward Steichen – Fashion Vogue & Vanity Fair

Après avoir rejoint  le pictorialiste renommé Alfred Stieglitz pour soutenir le mouvement « Photo-secession » aux États-Unis au debut 1900, période durant laquelle , l’appareil photo était pour Steichen un outil, au même titre que le pinceau ou le fusain, au moyen duquel exprimer sa perception de la vie

Après la Première Guerre mondiale, au cours de laquelle, il revient à la « straight photography », il évolue ensuite progressivement vers la photographie de mode. Au début des années 1920, l’éditeur américain Condé Nast le choisit pour devenir le photographe en chef des publications du groupe, imposant ses exigences en matière de photographie : « La distinction, l’élégance et le chic. » Il travaille particulièrement pour Vanity Fair et pour Vogue, magazines pour lesquels il réalise notamment de nombreux portraits de célébrités, démontrant une grande capacité à mettre en valeur ses sujets. Il travaillera également étroitement avec Carmel Snow d’Harper’s Bazaar.

Il photographie Gloria Swanson en 1924, puis l’une de ses photographies de l’actrice Greta Garbo, datant de 1928, parue en couverture du magazine Life le , est considéré comme l’un des portraits in.oubliables de l’actrice

Edward Steichen fut aussi  le photographe principal de Vanity Fair et de Vogue dans les années 20 et 30.
Reconnu pour son style distinctif et l’usage qu’il faisait de la lumière dans ses portraits dès le début du siècle, Steichen consacra sa vision artistique à « transformer la photographie de mode et à capturer la sophistication de la femme moderne . Son travail pour la mode en particulier à révolutionné le genre de la photographie de mode.
