Ruth Bernhard

Ruth Bernhard est né à Berlin en 1905. En 1927, après deux ans à l’Académie de Berlin de l’art, Ruth a déménagé à New York où elle a commencé à poursuivre sérieusement une carrière dans la photographie.Huit ans plus tard, elle a rencontré Edward Weston en Californie et a été profondément ému par son travail.Il lui a révélé le potentiel créatif profonde de la photographie et de ses implications artistiques.Désireux de travailler avec lui, elle a déménagé à la côte Ouest peu après.
En 1953, elle se installe à San Francisco et est devenu un collègue d’Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Minor White et Wynn Bullock. Elle a enseigné et dirigé des master classes à travers les États-Unis à travers son 95e anniversaire.

C’est à l’âge de 24 ans que Ruth se met à la photographie professionnelle. En 1929, elle a prend un emploi en tant qu’ assistante de développement pour le magazine NewYorkais The Delineator, travaillant sous la supervision de Ralph Steiner. Mais elle n’ était pas très heureux dans cette fonction et rapidement elle quitte cet emploi. Avec son indemnité de départ, elle s’ achète un appareil photo  et elle  commence à prendre des portraits des amis de son père ( un cercle de designers et d’artisans.)

En 1935, Ruth  rencontre Edward Weston sur une plage de Santa Monica, en Californie. C’est une rencontre qui va transformer et élever l’ensemble sa perception de la photographie. «Je n’ étais pas préparée pour une telle expérience , dira-t-elle.  Voir ses photos pour la première fois fût pour moi quelque chose d écrasant. C’ était comme l’apparition de la foudre dans l’obscurité [ … ] Là,  devant moi se tenait la preuve irréfutable de ce que je avais cru possible ».
