The photomontage Hannah Höch

Peintre, photographe et collagiste allemande née en 1889 à Gotha et décédée en 1978 à Berlin. L’artiste Hannah Höch a commencé en 1912 par étudier à l’école d’art à Berlin.

En 1915 au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale, elle rencontre Raoul Hausmann, avec qui elle se lie d’amitié puis d’amour (partenariat artistique et amoureux qui durera jusqu’en 1922). Elle soutiendra à cette époque et plus tard aussi le droit des femmes à l’avortement et elle en fera deux au cours de sa relation avec Hausmann, dont elle subissait la violence.

Elle travaillera dans le domaine de l’artisanat pour Ullstein Verlag [Le Ullstein Press], afin de concevoir les patrons de vêtements et de broderie pour Die Dame [The Lady] et Die Praktische Berlinerin [The Practical Berlin Femme] en tant que modeliste de 1916 à 1926.L’influence de ce travail et de la formation précoce peut être vu dans ses œuvres ultérieures impliquant des références aux patrons de vêtements et de textiles. Parallèlement à cela, elle poursuit ses recherches auprès Emil Orlik et traite abondamment de la question du collage.

Quand Hausmann annonce le début du mouvement Dada en 1917, Höch était la seule femme parmi les dadaïstes à Berlin, auprès de ses collègues Baader, Huelsenbeck, Grosz et Heartfield.

Elle a été l’une des précurseurs dans la critique des questions contemporaines sous la forme de photomontages, une technique qu’elle a développé en 1919. Elle contribue à de nombreuses manifestations Dada à Berlin en 1918. Elle réalise des poupées dadaïstes et plusieurs photomontages en collaboration avec Hausmann.

En 1919, elle est l’une des conceptrices du photomontage temps critique. Elle devient juste avant 1920 amie Hans Arp et Kurt Schwitters Van Doesburg et Moholy-Nagy. Elle exposera en 1920, comme la seule femme à la « First International Dada. Messe » dans le salon d’art du Dr. Otto Burchard à Berlin. Exposition avec Raoul Hausmann, John Heartfield, George Grosz, Richard Huelsenbeck, Wieland, John Baader, Max Ernst en autre , considérée comme la plus grande action publique du mouvement Dada allemand.

Entre 1921-22, elle participe aux Manifestations Dada avec Schwitters à Prague et collabore au Merzbau. en 1924’, elle voyage à Paris où elle rencontre Tristan Tzara, Theo van Doesburg et Piet Mondrian . Elle part ensuite trois années en Hollande en 1924 où elle rencontrera la poète néerlandais Til Brugman. avec qui elle vivra quelques années une relation amoureuse.

C’est à partir de ce moment là qu’elle débute réellement les assemblages d’objets trouvés qu’elle crée en collaboration avec avec ses amis Schwitters et Arp. En 1929 Première exposition solo à la galerie avant-gardiste « De Bron » à La Haye. Elle rentre en Allemagne cette année là , et est choqué par l’influence croissante du mouvement nazi et décide de produire des œuvres plus engagées, et c’est alors que les nazis lui interdisent d’exposer entre 1933 et 1945.

A cette époque de la Seconde Guerre mondiale Hannah Höch se retire donc dans petite maison à Berlin-Heiligensee tentant de passer les années de la Troisième Reich en Allemagne, en restant calme et discrète.

Elle cache son art et ses amis dans la maison et va même jusqu’à elle enterrer par crainte des troupes russes certains de ses travaux pour un court laps de temps dans le jardin. Elle a épouse le très jeune homme d’affaires et pianiste Kurt Matthies en 1938, dont elle divorce en 1944.

Elle produira durant ses années des peintures. En 1945, après la fin de la guerre, elle est l’une des premières à façonner activement la vie artistique à Berlin et à aider à relancer activement la vie artistique à Berlin. Elle a donc grandement contribuer à la reprise progressive de l’art allemand après la guerre. Dans les années cinquante et soixante, elle crée des peintures abstraites ainsi qu’un grand nombre de collages de couleurs vives où la réalité semble ironique et fantastique.
